A Poem For Every Boy I've Ever Dated

i.
We were ten years old
You had another
I hope you’ve changed your ways to suit your recent child

ii.
On the thirteenth day, you tried to kiss my best friend
You’re all I remember from grade six
Last week you told me you’d always be here for me

iii.
You stole my first kiss
And I walked away
Wiping my lips

iv.
Had I been less shy, we could have gone far
You pushed me away and resorted to leaves
Since you ran away, I haven’t stopped thinking about how I could have made you stay

v.
Every new years, I remember how I snuck out
Only to spend the night in your arms
And be told “I don’t love you like I once did”

vi.
We fell for each other as the best of friends
When you called her your “best friend”,
I knew what was to come next

vii.
The “brother” I’d always known had fallen for me and the whole world egged us on
In my reluctance, I agreed to give us a chance
I’m so sorry for hurting you

viii.
Leading up to the notorious kiss,
We talked all day and night on my small, purple lifeline.
We were never meant to happen

ix.
My mother still asks about you now and then
I wish I knew how to answer her questions
I still think about you every day

x.
Fourteen months, I gave you my heart
Along with everything that came with it
It took four words to break me forever

xi.
The very first day we were together, you asked me if you were a rebound
I lied
I’m sorry for breaking your heart

xii.
One month was all it took for you to change my life
You’ve pulled me into your presence like the ocean
That you have yet to see
