Onwards to the shore

What are we looking for in this world? Is it meaning? Is it happiness? Is it love? Is it satisfaction? Or is it all of them? We are all sufferers in our own worlds, yet we look to each other for companionship in times of despair. We are all sailing on the sea of life with our own broken boats, tattered flags of false hope, bent masts, and a hungry heart. We are caught in the storm of dreams, lost in our heads, blinded to the reality of life. We keep singing the shanties of good days, of warm nights, of cool summer breeze, of the kisses of beloved, of the enticing life ahead when we reach the shore.

The lightning of the storm shows us glimpses of the waves ahead, the thunder deafening our joyful hearts, the rain soaking our summers wet with the dread of existence. Yet, we carry on. We rock backwards, we rock forwards, we slip, we fall, we latch, we duck, we faint, but still we breathe. We look to the boats sailing ahead of us, we look back to those who sank. We rescue those swimming for their lives, holding on to the broken pieces of their luggage. Ahead we sail, all together, searching for a shore that does not exist, for the warmth of a sun that will never rise, for a life that we shall never live.
