Broken

Sitting in your sweater that you gave on our first date
I weep until my eyes are sore and my face is blotched with red

There’s nothing to make this better, the pain I feel inside
There’s no way I can put this in the past and cast it to one side

My heart is broken, shattered. these shards I cannot mend
There’s no way I can carry on, there’s no way to pretend

I feel so empty, all alone, my life is incomplete
Your mugs still on the side board, your slippers on my feet

Your tooth brush lies next to mine upon our bathroom sink
What is that glistening on the floor, one of your cuff links?

I stare hopelessly at our pictures on the wall, of our wedding day
The flowers you surprised me with when I said “I’m not okay”

The card you gave on valentine, it’s the gift I love the most
Your spotty tie the children brought, still hung around our bed post

The ring upon my finger, our children in their beds
I felt like I was shot myself, when they told me you were dead.
