Broken Encounter

She was already broken when you met her
With cracked lips, shut eyes and torn hymen
Her diamond shaped heart lay like worthless pieces of graphite at her feet
Chest empty, head spinning
She had staples all around her edges
A desperate attempt to keep whatever
Was left of her in one place
But it seemed as impossible as trying to get high
On the lil’ bit of cocaine left beneath her fingernails
(Believe her, she tried)

She was already broken when you met her
With trembling knees so afraid they’d rather pretend they don’t exist at all
Frightened fibers at the verge of insanity
Snatching at her spine hoping it still had the strength
To keep her upright, to spell out dignity
Even in superscript
But she was just learning how to forgive the man
That played hopscotch with her hymen
Just so that he could accept the femininity in his wrist
She was three versions of herself
Even her shadowed stooped when she walked
So forgive her if she is not ready to believe in shooting stars
The way you do
To believe in happy ever afters
But are you willing to love her soft enough
So as not to awaken the demons she buried in shallow graves
Yet hard enough to get her to believe that not all men are the same
Because she was already broken when you met her….
