I am from where the trees blow, and long days at the park
To corner stores down every street turn
The sound of cars and buses at night and bright city street lights
I am from “Go head girl, show em’.” to “Must be jelly, cause jam don’t shake like that!” and a cool tough uncle
who always says “Go head soldier.”
I am from Spanish rice, pupusas, tortillas and tamales
The smell of chocolate cake and banana pudding in the oven
To cookouts and soul food.
I am from curly hair, wavy hair, and straight hair
To light skin, brown skin, and dark skin
From rhythmical beats and simple harmonies
I am from hard field workers, survivors, teachers, religion, and pride.
Respect goes a long way from “Yes sir” and “Yes ma’am” to “Please” and “Thank you”
To expecting a plate even if you’re not hungry
I am from making something out of nothing and doing what you have to do
I am from love, laughter, and courage
Strength, faith, and bond
I am from bits and pieces around the world
I am from culture, and uniqueness.
