On the Last Days of Summer

On the last days of summer
We try our best to fall
In love, in step, from consequence;
To savor the memory of it all.

As the leaves begin to brown,
We come outside ourselves to play.
Young at heart, college upstarts;
Carpe diem, seize the day.

A little bite of feistiness,
The bittersweet scent of pride
Tears at our every inch,
And overrides the need to hide
Away with all the paperwork, there’s time enough for that.
In this night you’re all I need
The beating my heart works at.
