Ode to Auden

Ode to Auden

You see,  you see he inspired me
Auden W H
But now I am told that his styles somewhat old
Auden W H

Abandoned, deserted like an  Indian girl
in a family desperate for sons
The classics discarded until they are retro
When time rediscovers their fun

We rip them apart. We look for the art
Yet with only a glimpse, we would see
It is in that first glance that they often entrance
As the Beatles would say let it be

So now I flounder, I wonder, I ponder
what a poet is trying to do
Am I mad to decide that a spade is a spade
Not a hammer, a drill or a canoe?

But what are they saying? I hear them all chant
Lets look for the hidden meaning
A poem about sandwiches they decipher, devour,
All the while I am grinning

My message my intention my lesson to you
Just float  on the surface and know
This is a pond, paddle, enjoy it
Don’t dive, there is nowhere to go
