The Unsure Euphonium Player

To the Liberty University Wind Ensemble

At first I was unsure
Given the option,
I would almost have chosen
Sleeping in
Doing nothing
Rather than Riding on a busy bus for hours on end
Performing 11 concerts in 8 days
But I’m so glad I didn’t

At first I was unsure
I knew not many
Of the people who would be
Going on tour with me
A few trumpets
A piano player
Maybe a clarinet
But now, I can safely say
I know quite a few more than that

I know a pair of side-splitting Tubists
A few cool clarinets
A curly haired percussionist
And a quirky bassoonette

I’ve met a few french horn players
A bass and a saxophonist
A tumultuous trombonist
And this one fearful friendly flautist

But it’s not just the people
Who play instruments
It’s also the people
Who play host/hostess

I met a retired facetious flier
Whose faith was firm and clear
And his wife who made mouthwatering casserole
Quite friendly and full of cheer

I met a very kind-hearted woman,
Waiting and willing to serve
Generous beyond reason
And her son, silly and unreserved

Yet going in even further
There’s a lot more I can see
The virtue of loving-kindness
And blessing through generosity

Given the option a second time
I’d def’nitely make the same decision
Not only for the sights, sun, and sounds
But also to witness the fruition

For it is by His grace that I’m here
Not by my own talent, surely
And, through Him, my doubt disappears
Truly, I’ve found a second family
