Famous Last Words
Why does it seem
what is said while alive
lacks luster and gleam?
How did it evolve
that what is said in death
constitutes a person’s best resolve?
Who said that a person’s final sayings,
should be exalted in praise
than seen as afterthoughts at life’s decaying?
What makes the ending phrases so grand
that we hold on to them as precious jewels
excavated from ancient lands?
The answer to these questions
may seem useless.
Allow me to offer an explanation
which may not be fruitless.
You see words not only carry sentiment,
but the essence of life itself.
When an individual has departed
their presence is felt in these last breaths.
Words become immortalized as the soul escapes,
making the message and memory eternally heard.
Fueling desire so that in that far off day,
that I’d be known by famous last words!
