Consolation Prize

I can’t sleep, there is a storm raging just outside my windows.
I sit up in bed smoking and listening to the rain beat a path across my roof.
The lightning is like a constant strobe light, bringing day and night together.
There is something so familiar about the raw power on display here.
This is what my love feels like, the way I feel when I’m around you.
It is so loud, the rain overflowing the tops of the gutters, the vibrating bass of thunder,
It is like an echo of my heart.
I can’t bear to close the windows, even though the water is splashing inside now.
I couldn’t bear to be separated from the elements, the way I am separated from you.
What would it be like to have you here at my side, while all this chaos reigns?
Maybe that level of happiness just isn’t allowed by nature.
Perhaps that’s why the storm is so perfect, by way of apology.
But as awe-inspiring and utterly captivating as this tempest is,
It still falls short of you, my love.

Sometimes not being able to share the beauty of life with the one we love can take the shine away from even the greatest moments.
