I Already Miss You.

I will have to say goodbye now.
I don’t want to.
If I were free to choose you,
come hell or high water,
I would.
But I am not free.
I am bound by a thousand ropes that cut into my flesh like so many razors.
They pull me apart until I am nothing,
less than a ghost.
If I were a ghost,
I could haunt you in your sleeping hours.
I would siphon off every worry,
Until you were light as gossamer.
As it is, I am chained to responsibilities I cannot shirk.
I wear them heavy and draping.
And even as they swallow me whole,
I will think of nothing but you for the rest of my days.
My time will be marked by the ebb and flow of the sucking void that fills my chest,
In the place where you once stood alone.
Goodbye, my only love.
I miss you already.
