Caricamento in corso...

The Way and The Light

I had been swallowed by freezing waters and washed out to sea,
But the tides have turned for me now.

I didn’t notice at first, until the silty sands reached between my toes.
When I lifted my head, it was to see the stars again.

I was out of my depths for sure, but you were there, all smoky voiced and reaching hands.
My legs wobbled as I stood for the first time in a long time.

Every corner of my body breathing in the scent of your skin,
Moonlight and woodsmoke, coriander and joy,
Where for so long there was only salted brine;
My lungs shook with it, the ache of second chances and heat
A tourniquet on my heart to keep the poisonous debris at bay.

There is no fire under the water and I was so so cold,
But you burned,
Like the honesty of a hundred candles,
Light teeming from your pores into mine,
Branches of hope sowing themselves into this foundling’s life.

There were no missteps as I white-knuckle gripped your arm
And we walked away together,
From drowning regrets,
From the tangled seaweed of doubt,
From every long day I spent treading the waters, suspended in disbelief.

When I grew weary you stopped and built a fire.
We sat and I leaned into you.
I could feel the echoes of being dragged along the ocean floor begin to occlude our peace,
But your presence reared up leonine,
The broad expanse of your shoulders availing me the strength to dispel the roiling fears.

At daybreak, I drank with you from the pool of mirth,
Our laughter as clear as morning bells.
The road before us is a journey of halving sorrows,
Love is the deathless tether to which we are anchored.
