To Take Up Arms

My Stranger, I can’t explain my devotion to you.
It was there for you even before we spoke,
A protective urge to move like a shadow around you,
A need to strike down and devour those that oppose you,
To dismantle them down to their very core.
This is not like me.
I am usually of peace and reason,
But for you I am bared fangs and swiping claws.
I want to guard your dreams, and hide you in plain sight.
I feel a covetousness for your mysteries.
An awful thing, close to jealousy, clings to my fingertips as I long for you,
I did not know that I harbored this sleeping dragon.
If you knew the fierceness of my desire for you,
Would you fear me as well?
