The Refusal

She doesn’t fly these days
She removed her wings
And nailed them to the wall
Above the fireplace

They’re shredded and soot-stained
And too heavy now

The story is more important, she says;
The example of one who has buried
Her guns

Now she does her shopping
In the early afternoon
And the market music
Embraces her
Like a neutered lover
