Boil

They say sometimes you need to touch the stove to know it’s hot.

I’ve touched it. heard the sizzle, heard the spit and felt the flesh melt from my fingertips.
I’ve felt the white hot shoot from hand to humerus and seen the red skin blister and turn gangrenous.
I’ve nursed the wound and dressed it,
Bathed it and caressed it,
Made sure the tiny tactile grooves are perfect and well rested.
So when bandages are removed and I see the skin improved,
Toughened scars on a war wound,
Scars that will always whisper you,

Why can’t I keep my hand from the stovetop?
