Thanks to Leonard Cohen

I humbly bow before your tender mercy,
for no other reason than I’m sorry.

As I listen to my old pal, Leonard,
crooning out his holy tunes,
there’s a message sounding clear
within those silky prophet’s words
there in the space between the lines.

Repent.

If I am sorry.
I must let you know.
Not for your sake,
nor for mine.

But with this hope and prayer,
that the choking thorny bramble,
overgrown and wild,
between our sacred boundaries,
may by some miracle
of providence and nature
wither and fall away.

I am sorry.

Though I can’t remember what I’ve done,
I was lost in the woe of the long forgotten,
and the lust for anything to ease the pain.

Like our forlorn bird
on that damned hot wire,
I was dancing to whatever tune
I believed I must,
to keep from frying
in some junkie’s unholy fire.

By the grace of the one who chants
through my old buddy, Leonard,
I am still here.
I have been redeemed.
I’m no longer called to dance that hellish jig.

Thanks again to good old Leonard,
as he strips it down to the only things
to say that are true and holy.

Hallelujah!

And I am sorry!
