From My Black Eyes

Respuesta a "Negra Limonense"

Melting down on piercing sun,
with amber cheeks, I sing my song:
Beneath the palms, by the sea,
a voice of joy I can still breathe.

My Liquid memories of flooded dreams,
confess the strength of brave black limbs,
of  dancing Heroes whose hands could  paint
the once pale world when  freedom was constrained.

In the dance of dancing drums,
beating hearts had built the ports,
to farewell the ships of slavery
and welcome the railroads of endless bravery.

Papaya smiles, pineapple tears,
our ancient tales awake our fears,
but then with feats our courage is revealed,
with coco signed, with banana sealed.

Limón, Limón,
Patty, Rondón
Oh Rice and Beans,
Oh Black Star Scenes!
Sublime is your story of great wide hips!
Let me exult the glory of your non paling lips.
Let me not forget the roots of your Afro—Caribbean magic powered land,
Let me be buried at Cahuita, where thirsty sea kisses forever thy refreshing sand.
