The Fallen

My Centenary Tribute

'The cry went up, we were as one,
To war we go hurrah,
To fight the foe, to fight the Hun,
Be home for Christmas, a job well done

We were boys and men,
We were full of life,
Excited, nervous, young,
Not knowing what was coming next,
The end of life begun

To France then us,
The first real trip we ever had to take,
The first and last, for most of us,
Had we known for pity’s sake,

That death upon us, it did look,
With bombs and guns and fire,
The waste of youth, the waste of life,
To live our one desire,

We died in droves in foreign fields,
We none of us knew why,
With so much life in front of us,
That we had to die,

A century past and we lie still,
A memory to those here now,
Remember please our toil and strife,
Our foreign and final sacrifice

To honour us we ask one thing,
Respect the price we paid,
For you to have a chance of peace,
Our life’s for you we laid!
