The Bailout

Little Betsey stands on the beach
All 49 pounds of her
Blue pail, popsicle dripping
Flowered two piece and sun hat

Her mother, Danny is confused
Studying her cook book
With pictures of shiny torts and glazed ham

Where is Dave? she wonders
But she hears the hammering and understands
For the thousandth time,
that she lines up behind the shingles and roofing.
He doesn’t love me anymore, she mumbles
I’m parked on this beach like an old Toyota

For his part, Dave has it all
5 penny nails and a beer
He is working his way up to the house
On the shady side
Wind in his hair
