The Mountain

I’ve been climbing my whole life

Although admittedly, I’ve stumbled

Mother told me to be brave

My Grandaddy taught me to stay humble

“It only takes one slip

To fall to the bottom of that mountain

Eyes ahead and keep your grip

Leave your burdens where you found them.”

My Father always tells me

“It can’t be this hard forever,

When you work yourself to death, Son

You can buy a spot in Heaven.”

I was raised to believe

We’re all born equal in this world

In the end, I know for sure

We all die equally poor.

I’ve learned some things the hard way

That’s what got me here today

Now I listen to your Prophets

I still don’t trust a word they say.

I seek salvation for myself

And friends I’ve lost along the way

I’ll never reach my destination

If I’m buried in the landslide life became.
