Polluter Pays

I had a dream of plastic seas
And closed my eyes as not to see
Infiltrated coloured shards
Hiding in my mother’s gums
And when she smiled
Her teeth were smoke
From barren eyes she
Laughed until she choked
I had nowhere to lay her bones
The soil was long since dust
I couldn’t cry for fear of burn
An acid taste upon my tongue
My son reached up with tender palms
Too pale to see the light
I shushed and bid him off to sleep
The world’s too cruel tonight.
