California Breeze

The Santa Ana had begun to blow
Squeezing through the old Cajon Pass
The sky would have been very dark
Were it not for the brilliant stars

The gentle warm breeze rustled
Through the old old leaves
Of the eucalyptus trees wafting
The sweet fragrance of ancient times

The soft wind carried the aroma
Of distant sage and forgotten flowers
Of lonely lives lived within
A desert land that never changed

The owl hoots as it has forever
And we listen and wonder
At the surrounding life
Beckoning And calling in vain
