Fairytale Endings?

Once upon a time, there was a young
girl who dreamed of a better life.
She screamed, and cried, and even
prayed for the strength to make it
through each and every day.

When she shared these feelings no
one could understand.  They all just
lied and said that everything would
be alright; they told her how beautiful,
brilliant, and amazing she was, in hopes
of seeing her smile.

She accepted the compliments, and let it
all be, because nobody, not one person,
could really see.  Her heart was aching,
at the verge of breaking, and everything
they’d say only eased the pain.

You see, she knew she wasn’t ugly, stupid,
or insignificant to the world.  What she couldn’t
grasp was her self-worth.  She hated herself for
all that she was because she could never get it
right.  Always lying, and screwing up all that
she had; but she couldn’t control this madness.

So she bottled it up, and kept it inside, then
taught herself how to put on a show
and keep a straight face.  And she hopelessly
wandered and drifted through each and every
painful day.

You would never guess that she was capable
of such disgusting atrocities.  She herself would never
believe what she had done.  Although she fought it
with all her might, the feelings she had bottled
and masked began to burst at the seams,
her seams.

Once she began she couldn’t get enough.
Slicing and dicing away at her skin, she was
finally freed.  This freedom didn’t last however,
when people began to notice.  They fought and fought
to stop her, because it’s so socially unaccepted.

And how I’d love to say that she was convinced
to stop, and was free to talk even when none could
understand, and she escaped from this mess with
nothing but a scratch or two..... but that isn’t so.
She still slices and dices, though much more carefully;
She wouldn’t want the public to know.

And where is she now, you may ask?
Well she’s sitting in her kitchen, nibbling on a cold
blueberry pancake, while typing this story to you....
Why? Because life isn’t a fairytale,
and there are no happy endings.
