Poem CXIV

The whole world about me has grown empty, abandoned by the men to forget to take me with them.
I am alone on this vast earth, with no other company than that of the animals which the men do not need, either, of the trees which they do not think they need.
And tomorrow, when they miss the song of the lark or the perfume of the rose, they will remember that once there was a flower and once a bird. And perhaps they will think that it was a good thing to have them.
But when they miss my timid verse, no one will know that once I walked among them.
