*Buttercups In May

There used to be a game we played
with buttercups in May.
Hold a cup to your neck and see it
glow like a summer’s day.
“It means you like butter” I was always told
and believe it I would say.
But now I know, well... I think I know,
that it’s wrong to think this way.

You see this little frog, so full of poison,
it was dangerous to play.
The silly thoughts of childhood, sometimes
never go away.
Now there are those who should know better
but believe in nonsense anyway.
Older, but no means wiser, still think true
about buttercups in May.

For me, tis only in my memory
now is where they lay.
My answer now as ever was,

“I never cared for butter anyway.”
