I'm Not a Writer
Anytime someone says I’m an amazing writer I laugh.
I’m not a writer.
I barely passed my composition classes in college.
Hell, I had to take one of them twice.
What I do I wouldn’t consider writing.
Writing has structure and rules that must be followed.
I’m not a structured individual and rules tend to annoy me.
I follow the major ones, like don’t stab someone.
But those itty bitty ones, those I enjoy bending.
No, what I do is ramble.
I take the thoughts flying around in my head
and throw them onto paper
Whatever ones stick I nail them down so they don’t get anyway.
And every so often those thoughts line up
and create a coherent message.
This message may be universal and can be conceptualized
by all that read whatever mess I’ve presented
And other times it’s hidden.
Only visible to those with the “decoder ring”.
The past experiences similar to mine
That creates a certain view
or way of thinking
Linking us for a moment in time
As their eyes skim across that one line,
That one idea where they scream to themselves
YES! I totally understand this.
That is not writing.
No, what I do is have a conversation.
With anyone willing to listen …
Anyone willing to look at my words,
my thoughts …
and try to decipher them.
No I’m not an amazing writer …
I’m just that crazy guy talking to himself
Waiting for someone to talk back.
