I’ve never been the kind to
submit to common propriety.
Rules sunder us two, and
then bleeds your keen moiety
into my shallow, unhallowed,
barely alive society of
instrumental people and
heart-wrenching efforts
made for unmade promises.

But, I’ve never been the kind
to say “I belong to someone;”
to look at the lot, and think
my soul can contour to just one;
that I could even surmount lust
when my heart-strings are undone,
but I work, and I save and I play
in my books, when I can, until
we meet again, as I promised.
