Immortality

I died once, but I came to life
With pain that stabbed me like a knife;

And once again I know I died–
Afraid! And yet that shell flew wide.

A singing bullet cut the air;
I said a catch of a childish prayer–

If I should die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

‘Before I wake–’
