Ashes & Anecdotes

For my mum

Sadness is a poem
Our hearts write to us
over a lifetime
Watching and Hoping we’ll stop rushing about
And finally sit down for a proper chat with a cuppa
To read and talk like the old friends we are

Love is a set of keys we can’t find but already hold
Often waitimg just round the next corner
Or Inside the back cover of books we know we should finish
Clippings we should sort, articles to be filed, wrongs to be righted, battles to fight
A smile we can’t see on a face turned away
The glasses perched uselessly on our heads as we struggle to read the blurry outlines of wisdom that might finally enlighten us

Snow melts and leaves no trace
Having briefly shown us the shape of the world outlined in a fragile whisper

Tears and smiles
laughter and grief
in a jumble of recollection

Our fear we may not meet ourselves
before it’s too late
Feels the same as the weight of words we wish we’d said
As the ache of your passing
As the years we have left
Remembering your joy and smile each time you saw us
