Night Terrors

When I was young
I had bad dreams
Of a looming darkness
And fright’ning death-screams.

In the shadows of my room
Were bleeding white eyes,
That whispered nightmares
And echoed shrill cries.

I’d wake up
And feel by my side
Dampness on the pillow,
From tears I had cried,

And next to my bed,
Knelt, like in prayer,
A fullness in the darkness.
Again you are there.

My white noise, murmuring, smothering
Me with a heavy rain,
My friend within the darkness
Drowning at last
The ghosts of my past,
Humming me to sleep again.
