There, upon the loose dirt,
I was a stone’s throw from her,
Goddess Incarnate.
She had snakes for hair,
she had green flames for eyes,
she was reverent and cruel,
unbending but just,
she was worshipped
by the Holy Man
whom she married.
In my fright I turned to him,
to placate my fears of the Unworldly Woman,
but he only uttered a single word to me,
a word I’ll never forget,
He said Cheers when I met him,
and by cheers
presumably he meant:
Brace yourself
for are standing on
hallowed ground
and I sense
you know not
what you do.
