Eternal Life.

An unhappy birthday.

I do not believe the soul goes on forever.
Ordinary, small, events of chaotic happenstance, signify nothing of greater importance, than a continuing universe.
A butterfly here, a feather there, a knock in the night.
Insignificant.
That I think this way, does not make my grief the greater than those, who lean on faith in fantasy, to help them on their stumbling way.
A crutch for the masses.
But who is not lame?
No.
The missing of you will be the same because you have left us here, worse for the lack of you!
I take seriously the inherited, personal responsibility, to stretch the spark of your stardust fueled existence further than you were able to do yourself.
In sharing memory, we keep you warm and here with us, for just an instant longer.
We will tell tall tales and laugh and cry and the memory of you will grow in the telling of the generations, though you grow no more.
We will speak your name to savour the way it tastes  on our tongues and in our mouths.
“Mary,” we will say. “Mary would roll her eyes at us for making a fuss.”
But secretly she would glow inside to know the love with which she is remembered.
The shaping of us all by giving that love in return.
This  is what is truly eternal.
