Hold Her

By Evelyn Jey

Hold her,
Soft against you,
She’s afraid to look down.

Hold her,
Your fingertips on hers,
She feels lost.

Hold her,
Your chest against her back,
Wind through her hair sending the quietest pain.

Hold her,
Look into her eyes,
They are troubled by the way the clouds move.

Hold her,
But not too tightly–
She’s afraid she will be trapped.

Hold her,
She wants to be safe,
She is only a child.

Hold her,
Her wings are wet,
The air burns.

Hold her–
The world is new and bright.

Hold her,
Then uncover her eyes,
Let her see the sun.

Hold her,
Brushing against her shoulders;
Feathers are lighter than bones.

Hold her, then let her go– and she will fly.
