identity

First thought not about ethnicity,
but  rather, that someone
could exist between identities,
but society is constantly rejecting me.
Identity is spiky, it’s painful,
my identity is other, mixed, not white,
piecing together of fragments, of experiences,
separate and discrete cultural experiences,
edges are sharp, it’s painful,
no one is like me,
my exact patch work.
But my first thought was not ethnicity.

I am an individual
an independent thinker,
someone who has carved her own path,
even when lonely,
someone with resilience, tenacity,
on my hands and knees,
someone with beliefs
that compassion and humanity
come before all else
even if all this is meaningless
if it doesn’t matter
if life is suffering
if the universe is indifferent.
I’m a nihilist
but I believe in compassion,
just in case,
just in case.
