Winter's End

Today, I just stood still for a while
  and watched the trees.
There was a chill to the air,
  it was damp, but not quite cold.
The red dirt had a fresh coat of green.
The first flowers had arrived;
  purple, white, yellow...
All I hear are the beating of dove wings in the treetops,
  a woodpecker pecking for a snack,
  a lone buck strolling through fallen leaves,
  pausing to look back at me.
The faint sound of the wind
  as it winds through the contours of the mountains,
declaring winter’s end.
