Life on the Line

liquid blue nightgown
made of lighter fare
floats in romance of autumn air
a ballerina in an erotic dance
longing to join that v-trail in the sky

there are fantasies within
the purple trim on bodice and hem
of nights in exotic climes
as if sprouting wings were
not such an extraordinary thing
for lingerie to do

towels billow and scowl
resigned to their unadorned design
find drying bodies a useful art
think nightgowns frivolous -
full pajamas a desirable alternative

cotton underwear watches, enthralled
modesty lost in melodrama
though unaccustomed to undulating
in such public displays
of stretched elastic - tags declaring
FOR GENEROUS BOTTOMS

fleecy sweatshirts
earth and sky transposed
arms hanging in surrender
find little space for thought
bullied and bending as they must
to the will of the pistol wind
aimed at their headless torsos

the unifying factor in this play
   the wire that stretches
from house to tall pine tree
and the flimsy wooden pegs
that keep us suspended above the earth
