Someone Special
Butterflies before the first time we met,
the subtle smell of my perfume stuck on your skin,
big shoes on the welcome mat,
echoes of your heart beating in my ear,
remnants of your cologne as they cling to my covers,
late nights spent discussing politics and world problems,
learning to cook lasagna; because it’s your favorite,
eating cookies and watching movies,
cuddling on the couch; in the dark,
watching you play with the pups; they like you almost as much as I do,
e—cards when you’re away shooting hoops,
free physical therapy after tough workouts,
three little kittens, what a creep,
the way your voice draws a smile on my face,
good morning, how was you day, goodnight texts,
long talks of future and past,
drunken rides home,
comfort when I cry, even when you cause the tears,
hugs when I’m homesick,
running your fingers through my hair,
your sense of humor and use of the word ridiculous,
you thinking I’m crazy,
and me proving it,
arguments ending in a strengthened relationship,
standing on my tippy toes and still can’t steal a kiss,
you satisfy my craving for chocolate
and leave soft sweet kisses on my forehead,
I still feel the gentle flutter of those butterflies
“That honestly made me smile.”
