The Salt in the Sea

I set the storm in my sights -
With a shape, cut out in the headlights,
Your neck, crooked high at the moon,
A howl of ruin, stuck hard in your throat.

But we broke the brewing sky,
When you stacked your roar against mine,
A million pieces turned to rain,
We watch them drown us,
One by one.

We drew these lines at our feet -
Traded shots of our gritted teeth,
This love, all blood and boiled noise,
Gave the choice: build the bow or the branch.

So the city turned to see,
When you brought your arrows to me,
A thousand widening eyes,
To watch us snap them
One by one.

In the wake we finally saw,
The weight of arms and the cost of war -
A siren song stained red in the night,
A phantom guide, making strays of our hearts.

But the way came clear to see,
When we marked the woods from the trees,
A hundred desperate voices,
We hear them fall silent,
One by one.

Now as hand runs over bruise,
And relief washes over you,
Shed our dragon hide and rusted roar,
Head true north, for the ocean scene.

So in the waves we learn to breathe,
Now we’ve stripped the salt from the sea,
The two of us tame the current,
To claim the seven,
One by one.
