If I Could

If I could
I grew up in the heart of Germany, the splendid capital, Berlin
Until the war of course, which for me, brought only one good thing
It was because of this gruesome and horrible war
That I met a British soldier, whom I would love forevermore

We got married and in 1960, and moved to the United Kingdom
We had four precious children, two daughters and two sons
They’re all grown up now, with their own children
That’s the perfection of life, I wouldn’t change a thing

If I could though, there are a few things I would have changed
That’s if, I had the power to have the stars rearranged
The life of a soldier meant that you had to go when/where duty calls
As a loving and devoted wife I understood, I had no say in this at all

If I could, I would have preferred to be settled
A little farm perhaps, a dog, some chickens, horses and a stable
I would have loved waking up and tending to the animals
I’d have a beautiful garden tended by my own fair hands

I have a deep love for animals, plants and nature
That I wish I could have explored much-much further
I do believe I accomplished this in my role as a mother
I had unconditional love and became a caring giver

If I could, I’d go riding in the spring and summer times for miles
Enjoying the beauty of the countryside as I escape for awhile
If I could, I would be entering the villages’ floral competitions
As nurturing plants is one of my greatest passions

If only I could!!

It’s been several years now since my beloved Richard, has been laid to rest
After over 40 years of marriage that withstood time; the ultimate test
The memories of his passing has transformed my views on death and life
As I now sit in joyful anticipation for the blessed day we re-unite.

The poem was inspired by a friend who wanted to do some charity work for a home for the elderly in Yorkshire. I met and had a informative chat with Mrs. H. Rains and tried to capture and summarize her life's story and desires in this poem.
