Hiraeth

There are words
that I was mistaken
to say.
There was one time
when we were strangers,
broken onstage.
There were four walls
and we both knew
how one of us
must eventually go.
We could toss words
listlessly
as a child unaware.
It was quiet and we
filled the space
with our voices.
But I cannot talk to you
because you are up in your
palace of glass,
walking with heavy brass shoes.
The castle will break,
I say,
but still you are walking,
and I am listening
for the crash.
I don’t want you to fall,
I want you to fly,
but I cannot help you
from down here.
Your gates have been locked and
I am waiting for you.

When you are ready.
