Grendel

An Incomplete Fable

Grendel is throwing chairs around
on the deck of the soon to be sinking Titanic.
Nobody really knows how Grendel got on the ship
and slipped himself in to replace the outgoing captain.

Nobody knew he’d be in charge when
the seas got rough, or that he’d think it fun
to navigate so as to make the journey rougher,
while shouting BOO YA! at the rising storm.

Most of the passengers stayed below deck,
panicked and plotting to throw the troll
overboard into the deadly, stormy seas,
but enough of them, with no sense at all,

stayed by his side, called him their captain,
and shouted BOO YA! themselves,
while they blamed the storm
on the frightened passengers hiding below.

An iceberg is ahead and Grendel is clueless
as to anything but his voracious lust.

Can the ship avoid a collision?
Will Grendel be tossed in the sea to drown?
Beowulf is around and we need him to slay the troll.
But if he does who will slay Grendel’s angry mother?

The panicked passengers hope,
but that part of the story is yet to be written.
