Recorded Interview Under Police Caution

Two tapes whirring, interview time 17:18
Pc Plod and Dibble identified themselves
They asked the detainee to give his name
The impromptu interrogation then began

The good cop began his practised patter
Bad cop scowling at the hippy gentleman
The comedy duo’s plan was incrimination
To get the offender to incriminate himself

For this pothead to supply verbal evidence
So maximum penalties could be extracted

When it was the pot grower’s turn to speak
He calmly said– I don’t deny growing weed,
I deny it’s a crime as cannabis is my religion
Herb is sacred to me and ordained by God . .

. . For the benefit of the prosecutor and jury

The germination of a benign cannabis seed
Was an inalienable act of natural divine law
Indeed it was the Will of God the seed grew

I’ve only done what man’s done since time
Immemorial, I cultivated a few ganja plants
Gave 'em water, light, love and best nutrient

I’ve done no harm or been a  public nuisance
An allegation of  herb criminality is nonsense
The only injured party is myself by the police

Property damaged, possessions confiscated
My liberty taken, treated roughly and stripped
Searched intrusively by a cop with cold hands

The indignant cannabis cultivator took a breath
He continued– again for the benefit of the jury,
I’ve not done any crime cultivating a few plants

Although the good Judge may tell you different
. He might order the jury to ignore all evidence
And find me guilty on all the charges concocted

However the jury isn’t obliged to follow his order
Jury nullification can b applied by jury members
They can go wi’ their own conscience and moral
To decide a law is bogus, allegations crime free

The herb enthusiast paused, he continued anew
—For the benefit of the prosecutor, I only hope . .
You elect not to waste the court’s valuable time
Squandering public funds on prosecuting plants
Seeing it’s not in the public’s interest to proceed

The sticky thumbed gardener finished his tirade
—I’ve listened to you cops, you’ve listened to me
Either charge me, or let me go . . Interview over!
