Viet Nam Vet

Viet Nam Veteran
My dear sweet husband
Never stopping never still
Always looking and listening
Such a nasty war it was

He came home shattered
In body and mind
No one cared they all jeered
Baby killers Monsters they cried
Tears running down the soldiers faces

The atrocities they saw
Burned orphanages kids with bombs
Friends dying planes exploding
People praying crying out for help
What did it solve? What did it help?

They gave more than their time
They gave their lives and more
The ones left alive gave their lives too
Living in agony day after day.
Afraid of the sounds and all around

He sits in silence and thinks
About all the friends he lost
About all the times he nearly died
He recalls funny stories from time to time
But the horror overshadows the funny every time

I tell him to ignore the sounds outside
But he can’t get past the fear
PTSD they say he has
It won’t ever go away
He lives in fear and pain every day

This is what Viet Nam did for him
This is the thanks he gets for his duty
Fear and a broken body and a broken life
I cry out to God for him to be healed
He is so dear to me you see

He has his grandkids to play with
He has his wife me to live with
He has his kids to remind him he is loved
And he has family to stand by him
But fear rules his life and always will.
