Pegasus

Robert Kennedy Visits Stellenbosch University 1966

A rich and powerful man, beautiful and bold,
You flew on wings of white, like Pegasus of old.
And like that liberty-loving, stalwart steed,
You came to help a country much in need.

Scorn of scions despite and staring distaste in the face,
You came to where I was, wrapped amongst the ruling race.
Then, like that pale horse during days of yore,
You fought the foe, not on the field, but from the floor.

Thrust against thrust, lunge against lunge, you parried their attacks,
Then came back with a riposte, put their policy on its back.

Students speak still of your epee bout against their sabre brute,
And how you finally forced them to salute,
Unaware that in the wake of that win on their terrain
Pegasus would plummet earthwards, bullet in his brain..
