No One sang Silence

I laid at home and watched the rain
While I tapped my fingers on a pane
Of glass that sat beneath my door.
My thoughts drifting and shifting, bending to the pain birthed by wrath.
As my gaze gazed into nothing, my fingers continued dancing on their glassy plane.
I heard a sound that was not rain tapping on the window pane.
The sound was soft as well as low.
Yet no sound have I ever heard louder than its bellow.
It was a song I knew by heart, sung to me many times since my life’s start.
A song that, to this day I never heard.
A song I could easily quote every word.
A song that could create both peace and violence.
A song sad, strong, but compliant.
A song that was mine, that forever echoed through my mind.
The song was silence.
I listened, eyes shut, to it’s tune.
The song crescendoed to fill the room.
Dust danced down the empty air to the wooden floor.
Some found rest at space beneath my door.
I opened my eyes and saw, to my surprise, a figure I have never seen before.
It was a figure who has been with me since the day I was born.
I locked my vision onto nothing as Nothing began to form.
I knew the stranger posed no danger, no will to pull me into a storm.
“What is your name?” I asked Nothing “I have never seem you before.”
“No One” he told me “Shall I sing some more?”
No One sat there smiling, singing the song that filled the room more than it had before.
No One sang silence better than anyone you or I have heard before.
He used the various taps of glass as his harmonious tone.
The drops of rain and my fingers on the pane that sat beneath my door.
His melody was sweet and fragrant.
His tempo, slow and patient.
“Come sing with me” was his plea pleaded wordlessly.
To his inquiry came no answer from me, for no answer came to me.
I gave no response, I was entranced by the ambiance that song sung in silence brought.
“Come sing with me. Sing the strong song sung silently. Sing with me the song that will last eternally.” Again was his plea he pleaded wordlessly.
This time I did respond.
I responded, forever bonded, to the vow to infinitely sing the song No one sung to me.
“Sing on.” I commanded “And I will join you until the world has ended.”
I sat still tapping on the glass beneath my door, never leaving my wooden floor.
I began to sing the song of silence with No one,  No One joined me at my door and took a seat on my wooden floor.
We sang a song that would last forever.
We sang the song of silence, together

(2013)

I wrote this after years without ever producing a single word of serious poetry. This poem was just to see if I still could.
