The Wizard

“Never judge someone by the way he looks or a book by the way it's covered; for inside those tattered pages, there's a lot to be discovered.”
Steve Cosgroves

Faraway long, long ago
Lived an old, grizzled wizard
With long beard as white as snow
But the eyes of a lizard

He walks with a long-gnarled staff
Long gray tattered robe he wore
Unkempt hair, a tassel hat
Crooked nose hard to ignore

Everyone in the village
Fearful repulsed petrified
Children of whatever age
When he passes by, they hide

Village edge atop a hill
Alone he lives in a hut
Not far from the old windmill
Door and windows always shut

But one day in the river
A young boy fell; he’s drowning
The wizard was quickly there
He saved the boy from dying

To all of the town’s people
Suddenly he’s a hero
They learned he’s a gentle soul
No more the village zero

Old folks pursue his advice
Children follow him around
Not scared of his lizard eyes
A new champion they have found

Remember that old cliché
It’s still relevant today
By his outside, judge him not
Only what’s inside his heart

“Today, while sitting in my car, I saw a couple of Hell’s Angels bikers. One smiled at me broadly. I smiled back and gave him a thumbs up. He nodded and was gone in a flash. All is right in the world.”
