Why Language?

Sorry..
Sorry for my grammar that people don’t understand
The way I write is the way I speak
The way I speak is the way I think

One sun, a writer noticed me, approached me
and said,"I see your smiling face everywhere,
but I can’t see your smiling face in a peace of literature" (ouch!)

In a quiet place, no obstacle when my mind speaks
But in front of people
I don’t even know if  am I mute or disabled

But yet...
I’m still proud to be pinoy
Brown skinned, bahay kubo, mango loving, people power, and Rizal winning wars without weapons
I will never hide who I am
why?

Because Adobo manok with rice
mmhhhhmm...
It fills my mouth with quiet and I stop thinking about the problems that stick in my head
Hangin ng dagat
uhhhuhhh...
It refreshes my mind

And right now I live in the new world where I need to learn new culture and environment
Although I’ve been here a year and half
I can’t tell my feelings to everyone.
Why?

Because I’m just a young woman who was born and raised
sa Pilipinas
But it doesn’t mean that I can’t handle your official language
Besides, I’m not the only one who has struggled with it

“Pssh..your accent is hella Filipino, Chinese, or whatever you are”
That’s what people say..
Do you know that feels?

It feels I’m the new  alien who came from another planet
And yes, yes it hurts the people who are still
learning the language

Although they had tried to say that new folks have their Asian accent
wait, what accent?
But everyone has an accent
perhaps in different way..

I remember when I was a sophomore in the Philippines
My Filipino teacher had to ask, “Why we used language?”
Everyone was quiet because they were scared of the teacher
But still
I had raised my hand and tried to answer the question uncertainly
"Is it because the language help us to communicate and show how we feel?

I was right..

We need the language to communicate, and  to show how we feel
It’s not how we show our accent nicely,

(2013)

Adobo manok - it's Filipino food
Hangin ng Dagat - Means "breeze from the sea"
sa Pilipinas - in the Philippines
