Homecoming

my senior homecoming dance
and I’m taking a freshman
the pictures,
obviously your first time getting a corsage
and my first time wearing one
we climbed in my car
I got to choose the music
since I drove
the dinner
we talked about everything
of course I let you pay
and leave the tip
we had an hour to kill
before the doors opened
walked into the record store downtown
looked at literally everything they had
the parking meter expired
but thankfully no one else noticed
drove over to the school
walked up
arm in arm
standing outside
waiting for the doors to open

trained in the art of chivalry
you walked to the driver’s side
opened my car door every time
every door we went through
you held open

inside
popping balloons
until we got yelled at
your obsession with the food
and jokes about the lemonade
the slow dances
awkwardly spinning at a snail’s pace
your hand in mine
my other hand on your shoulder
and your other hand on my back
my eyes shut
smiling
the hug after each one
line dancing
hamming it up with the band
the “rapid dab” contest
where you knocked your ponytail out

10:00 exactly
everyone was kicked out
right after the last slow dance
my eyes were tearing up
I grabbed my shoes, coat and purse
you took my arm
and we walked back to my car
time to go home
but we didn’t want to leave
I didn’t want to take you home
but I had to
the ride home
blasting Van Halen
getting to your house
you grabbed my hand
thanked me for everything
“good night, see you Monday”
“thanks for coming, I had a great time” I whispered back
and it’s true
I had a great time
it was awesome
best night of my life
a night neither one of us
will ever forget
ever

dedicated with love to my boyfriend (and homecoming date) Mitchell
