Love Lies Bleeding

Your silence cracks
The shards of my sane.
Your eyes look to me with
Askance of affinity.
We pass furtive notes
Of silence
Through bars
In a noisy cabin.
We need no jailor
No prison
No judge
Jury
Executioner.
The Ancient Truths
Confine enough
This jail is free
No faceless apparatus
Of the state.
When truths escape
Out of our skin
Though it is young
We have elders
To say we are wrong
To vainly disapprove
When we must
Pack our things and go
To see the world.
This slight smile
Asks more
Than it answers.
This slight smile
Affirms a friendship
That will never be.
This slight smile
Holds more truth
Than ancient lies.
When we hear these truths
We find they clean us
When sadness washes over us.
If we are clean
If we are pure
If it is so
Why we are fevered
In the bed
Where we have made home?
If we are clean
If we are pure
If it is so
Why do we yearn
For dirt?
Why do we turn
To the earth
To claim us?
Why do we roll in the filth
Of our “depravity”?
If we are clean
If we are pure
If it is so
Why can’t we shock
This lonely sin
From our bones?
