To Have Loved
To have loved
And to have been loved in return
I can imagine
Would be something that would burn
Into your soul
Forever and a day
To feel love
And have it back the same way
To have loved
And for it to leave
You must allow yourself
To grieve
To know a heart you held so tight
No longer yearns to kiss goodnight
Or hold you close
Or hold your hand
It may be hard to understand
At the time it leaves your side
Your heart and soul could not abide
The loss you felt, the pain, the fear
That no one else will hold you near
Remember the blessing you once had
Remember fondly and be glad
That your heart once felt the joy
Another’s heart did employ
The love, the warmth before the pain
It gives you strength to start again
Know that you are blessed to have had
At least a glimpse of forever
To know, that in that moment
You see love and eternity together
It may not have lasted many years
You may have shed a million tears
But it was worth it all the same
When priceless memories remain
They say that to have loved & lost
Is better than never to have loved at all
So loving at any cost
No matter big or small
Is worth the love that may conclude
In pain and tears and heartache
So take the chance
It may result
Eternity for love’s sake.
